History of El Gouna
About 30 years ago, the Egyptian Samih Sawiris, from a wealthy Egyptian family, found this beautiful place in a cheap location north of hurghada on the red sea.
Actually, he just wanted to find a quiet place for a small cottage by the sea, but the story went differently than planned.
It didn’t take long until sawiris friends, impressed with the splendor of the azure water and the beautiful mountain scenery, came to him to plan the beginning of a city and put it into reality.
Sawiris visited the German evangelical high school in Cairo. After graduation in 1980 as a diploma engineer of the technical university of Berlin, he founded his first company with National Marine Boat Factory. In 1996 he founded orascom hotel holding and 1997 orascom projects for touristic development.. He acted as president of the group since its founding in 1989. in the same year the construction of the Egyptian city el gouna starts.
The first hotels were built in 1989, today paradisio, the mövenpick resort & Spa (1995), the dawar el omda, the sultan bey (both 1996) and the Sheraton Miramar Resort (1997). ).
